Trash to Terracotta DIY

Updated: Sep 2, 2020

Hi Guys!!

It has been a minute since I did a blog post and I am so excited to be back- hope you guys are too! This one is a super quick, easy and fun DIY project that anyone can do and its super affordable! Bonus!!

This trash to terracotta DIY project is a perfect way to take second hand vases, pots, pitchers, etc with ugly and outdated patterns, give them a little love and turn them into stylish things we can add to spruce up our home! Its pretty straight to the point so let's go ahead and get into it!

Supplies:

-any kind of vase (glass, clay, porcelain, etc.)

-acrylic paint (satin or matte)

-paint brushes

-baking soda

-bowl (you don't mind mixing the paint in)

-popsicle stick (or something to mix with)

Instructions:

1. The whole point of this project is to take something you don't like and give it an upgrade to look like a beautiful terracotta clay vase, pot, etc that you will love. I would suggest looking around your house first because its always better to save money if possible. However, if you don't have anything laying around I suggest going to your local goodwill, or thrift store and finding a few to work with that you like the style of. I got 2 from goodwill and they were both under $15. (I would have gotten more but they didn't have ton of options.)

2. Set up your workspace and grab whatever acrylic paint you want to use. I chose to go with a taupe and beige. Usually terracotta is an earthy brownish orange but it will have the same texture of terracotta and effect either way. This is your DIY project for your home so pick whatever will go with your style, decor and desires! In a bowl combine your paint (1 cup) and baking soda (1 tablespoon.) Mix well!

3. Once its all mixed, start painting away! Don't be afraid to paint on a thick layer to try and cover any patterns or designs on the vase. Make sure to also paint the inside so it looks genuine. Once it's all covered, let it dry for several hours before adding a second coat if needed. Once you are satisfied, let it dry over night and then its good to go to style with whatever you want!

Once mine was done I styled it with some burnt orange christina grass thats super feathery and pretty for fall. I plan to change it out with the seasons and honestly I cant wait to do more.

Like I said guys, this one is straight to the point and so easy! The outcome is so satisfying and pretty immediate too so I really enjoyed this one. Please let me know if you do it and share your pics with me! Id love to see! Thank you for reading and trying it out!

xoxo
